Rugby 7s in the CWG

A full-size rugby pitch is used for rugby 7s games. As the name implies, it comprises two halves with seven minutes each and is played with seven players on each team rather than 15. A try is scored on average every 70 seconds in this shorter, quicker, and more scoring version of the Game where there is more space to move around and less downtime! The Game is played according to the conventional rugby regulations.

Twelve men’s and 12 women’s teams worldwide debut in the rugby sevens at Rio 2016. Rugby has recently gained a foothold at the Summer Olympic Games (as Rugby Sevens), with the United States Men’s and Women’s national teams qualifying for their first Olympic Games. With an emphasis on accessibility and engaging fan-friendly content, the championship will feature the thrilling sport of rugby sevens through a one-day tour to cities throughout Team USA and Canada.

The 2022 Commonwealth Games rugby sevens men’s tournament ended in Coventry on Sunday, with South Africa beating the Olympics champions, Fiji, 31-3, and winning gold. There were new names on the winner’s list at Commonwealth Games Rugby Sevens as Australia and South Africa won gold medals for the first time for women’s and men’s events, respectively. South Africa led 17-0 at the end of the first half after two tries from Muller du Plessis, JC Pretorius, and Shaun Williams. After the break, Du Plessis scored a second, and Mfundo Ndhlovu sealed a convincing victory after Fiji captain Waisea Nacuqu had managed a consolation goal.

Australia’s women claimed Commonwealth Games rugby sevens gold for the first time Sunday, following an extra-time heartache four years ago. Then South African men have crowned champions for a second time. Australia led 17-9 at half-time against Fiji in the women’s final, and, despite a spirited comeback from Fiji, Australia emerged triumphant 22-12 to clinch Commonwealth Games gold ahead of Australia’s Olympic triumph in Rio 2016 and add HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series 2022 title.

In the opening men’s quarter-finals, two-time Olympic champions Fiji turned on the style and defeated a brave Scotland 34-7, while reigning HSBC World Rugby 7s series leaders South Africa were too much for Canada, taking a 33-0 victory. It is not often the typically dominant Fiji are so thoroughly dominated as they were at Coventry Stadium. Still, it was a clinic during which the Blitzboks did not give the South Sea wizards any room for breath and made sure to extract all the charm and magic from the contest to clinch the glorious gold. Faith Nathan scored two of Australia’s four tries as they defeated Olympic champions Fiji in another final, 22-12.
